Today’s global financial turmoil has dominated headlines and left no market unscathed. The Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Asia will explore how the crisis has affected Asia and how Asia will respond moving forward. The panelists will present government, business, and academic perspectives on the crisis, what it means to Asia, and the future risks and opportunities for the continent.

  • Zhiwu Chen
    Professor of Finance Yale University

    Dr. Chen is Professor of finance at the School of Management at Yale University. Before joining Yale, Dr. Chen was Professor of finance at the Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At these universities, he has taught finance courses at the Ph.D., the MBA and undergraduate levels, including Investment Theory and Practice, Theory of Finance, and Options and Futures Markets.

    Dr. Chen is well known for his leading research in the academic world of finance. His research covers a wide range of topics, with a focus on stock valuation, investments, and financial options and futures markets. He has published numerous research papers in several prestigious economics and finance journals, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, American Economic Review, Journal of Business, and Journal of Economic Theory. Dr. Chen won the prestigious Merton Miller Prize in 1996 for his research on demographic changes and their impact on financial markets. He also received the Chicago Board Options Exchange Competitive Research Award in 1996 for his research on the Japanese stock market and related derivatives products.

    He has also been active in portfolio management since early 1992. Dr. Chen has been very successful in translating his expertise on the theory of stocks, bonds, options and futures into "real market" applications.

    Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in finance in 1990, a M.Ph. and M.A. in 1988, all from Yale University. He earned his M.S. degree in systems engineering from the Changsha Institute of Technology in 1986, and a B.S. in computer science from the Central-South University of Technology in 1983, both universities in China.

  • Mark W. Heaphy
    Partner, Wiggin and Dana
  • Mark Heaphy is the chair of Wiggin and Dana's Information Technology and Sourcing Group. His practice focuses on all aspects of the sourcing and procurement process, from initial RFP through implementation and beyond. Mark has broad experience across a variety of industry sectors, including financial services, healthcare, insurance, life-sciences, manufacturing, telecommunications and utilities.

    Mark helps clients structure, negotiate and document domestic, near-shore and off-shore, commercial relationships related to complex, global, outsourcing strategies and the development, distribution, customization, implementation, support and management of technology solutions. He has represented hundreds of customers and suppliers in sole-sourced and competitively-bid, sourcing transactions, including business-process and information technology outsourcing arrangements, software licensing and distribution transactions, technology development and systems integration agreements, software support and other professional services transactions, joint ventures and strategic alliances, cross-border technology transfers and electronic commerce and other internet-related matters.

    Mark routinely assists clients in diverse industries navigate rapidly-evolving, domestic and international, privacy and security regulations, including HIPAA, GLBA and the EU Privacy Directive. He frequently lectures on legal topics related to outsourcing, licensing and privacy issues and serves as an adjunct professor at the Quinnipiac School of Law, where he teaches computer law and the law of cyberspace.

    Mark graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and international relations. In 1993, he earned a Master of Arts degree in international relations from Yale University and, in 1996, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association's sections of International Law and Practice, Intellectual Property Law, and Science and Technology.

  • Dr. K. Thomas Liaw
    St. Johns Professor of Econ and Finance

    Dr. Liaw holds his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He is the author of several books on investment banking and financial markets. His recent book publication is The Business of Investment Banking: A Comprehensive Overview, second edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2006. He also recently published an article on China’s accession into the WTO and China’s financial markets. In addition, Dr. Liaw has published in the areas of capital markets, insurance, banking, repurchase agreements, and risk management. He is an associate editor for Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies.

    Dr. Liaw’s principal areas of teaching and research interests include asset management, capital markets, risk management, and investment banking. His current projects include risk management for financial institutions, equity and fixed-income trading strategies, and China’s financial markets. He served as president of the Chinese American Academic and Professional Society for 2005. He is a director of a bank. Dr. Liaw serves as an advisor to financial firms. He speaks on various subjects of investment banking and capital markets at academic institutions, executive programs, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, the World Bank symposium, Harvard China Review conference, and Information Management Network conference.

  • Raghav Nandagopal
    General Partner, Exigen Capital
  • Raghav Nandagopal is a General Partner of Exigen Capital with focus on investments in Financial Services, Media, Communications and Government sectors. Raghav has over 20 years of operating, technology and investing experiences with over 9 years in the PE industry. Prior to Exigen Capital, he was the Senior Vice President of Bank of America Capital Advisors ($3.2B under management) and a senior member of the Investment Committee. He joined BoA through the acquisition of U.S. Trust where he served as the Co-CEO of the PE funds and head of direct investment programs. He has extensive experience in sourcing, diligence, syndication, execution and exit management as a lead director and has played leadership role in raising over $350MM for portfolio companies. Some of his exits include NetLogic (NETL), Pilot Software (SAP), Gyration (Thomson SE), PowerSmart (Microchip), VST (Mosaid), Cydelity (Digital Envoy), and had oversight for Genoptix (GXDX). He has held 11 board seats during his tenure and has strong relationships with tier-1 venture, growth equity and buyout firms as coinvestment and LP partners.

    Prior to U.S. Trust, he was an Engagement Manager with McKinsey & Company where he served clients in communications, media, wireless and financial services sectors. He has also held senior management positions at AT&T Capital and Constellation Energy. He started his career as a Senior Consultant with Accenture in the late 1980's. Currently Raghav serves on the boards of Exigence Insurance Solutions, ExpertMarkets, Execue, and is an advisor to Cava Capital. He has also been a long time board member of the CT Venture Group (Stamford Chapter), Angel Investor Forum and has been an advisor to the annual Cross-roads Venture fairs.

    He holds a BS from University of Madras, MBA from the University of Bombay and an MS from Penn State, and has also completed executive programs at MIT and Carnegie Mellon
